Pharmacological action of

Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity, causes a narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, restores nasal passage and facilitates nasal passage .

The action of the drug occurs a few minutes after its use and lasts up to 10 hours.

Pharmacokinetics:

When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, therefore, its concentration in blood plasma is very small (not determined by modern analytical methods).

Indications

Used for acute respiratory diseases with rhinitis (runny nose), acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce swelling of the nasopharynx), to facilitate rhinoscopy.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline and other components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, surgical interventions on the meninges (history), pregnancy, lactation, 6 years old, children up to 6 years old 0.1% solution (0.001 g / ml).

Precautions: coronary heart disease (angina pectoris), diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, children under 2 years of age – for 0.05% solution (0.0005 g / ml).

Special instructions

Before use, the nasal passages must be cleaned. It should not be used for a long time, for example, with chronic rhinitis. Missed dose: use immediately within 1 hour, do not use dose after 1 hour, do not double.

Influence on the ability to drive a vehicle or equipment:

Xylometazoline, in dosages exceeding the recommended ones, may affect the ability to drive a vehicle and engage in other potentially dangerous activities that require concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions.

Composition of

1 ml of the solution contains:

active substance:

xylometazoline hydrochloride – 0.0005 g or 0.001 g

excipients:

benzalkonium chloride (in terms of anhydrous),

disodium hydrogen phosphate ,

sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate,

sodium chloride,

purified water.

Dosage and administration

Adults and children over 6 years of age are given 1-2 drops of 0.1% xylometazoline solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day.

For infants and children up to 6 years of age, use a 0.05% solution of 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 1-2 times a day. Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day and no more than 3-5 days.

Do not use the drug without a break for more than 3-5 days.

Side effects

With frequent and / or prolonged use – irritation and / or dryness of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, burning, paresthesia, sneezing, hypersecretion rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa, vomiting, headache, palpitations, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, insomnia, visual impairment, depression (with prolonged use of high doses).

Overdose

Symptoms: increased side effects.

Treatment: symptomatic under medical supervision.
