Pharmacological action
Maraslavin is a combined herbal preparation for topical use in dentistry with antiseptic, disinfectant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, irritating, astringent, local anesthetic and stimulating regeneration. At the beginning of the course of treatment, the drug causes irritation, hyperemia and swelling of the mucous membrane of the gums. Due to the hypertonicity of maraslavin, toxic decay products are removed from the gum tissue and gingival pockets. Then there is an increase in the number of collagen fibers, their compaction, the formation of a new epithelium and the restoration of the normal structure of the gums and strengthening the binding of periodontium to cement of the root of the tooth.
In the treatment of the hemorrhagic form of periodontosis, the edema and bleeding of the gums first decrease, which first acquire a pale and then pale pink color and become denser, the gingival papillae become thinner and gradually pressed against the tooth neck at the enamel-cement border. Gum pockets shrink or disappear. With the pyorrheic form in the first days, an increase in the amount of purulent exudate is observed, then its amount gradually decreases until it disappears completely. The gingival papillae are resorbed, the edges of the gums are aligned and firmly pressed to the teeth. Stabilization of tooth mobility occurs.

Dosage and Administration
Topically. Treatment is carried out by the dentist and begins with the removal of the supragingival tartar. At the same time, measures are taken to ventilate the gingival pockets with a spray or a stream of warm water.
Then Maraslavin is installed using loose cotton swabs in alveolar and bone pockets using a probe. To do this, pour 20-25 ml of Maraslavin into a glass vessel, with which cotton swabs are abundantly moistened, the size of which depends on the width of the alveolar or bone pocket. Tampons are left in pockets for 5-6 minutes, while tampons are placed on the other side of the teeth or in the pockets of adjacent teeth. This procedure is repeated 5-6 times in one session (sequentially in each pocket). With each swab change, it penetrates lighter and deeper into the alveolar pocket. The last tampons are left loose in pockets, the patient is released until the next day with a recommendation to remove the tampons in case of fever (due to purulent exudation) or other health conditions and consult a dentist.
In the second treatment session, the tampons remaining after the first visit are removed and the subgingival tartar is removed. Sequentially put several swabs in each pocket as in the first session. Last tampons are also left for as long as possible for 24 hours.
Treatment is carried out at intervals of three months. 17-20 treatment sessions should be carried out according to the method described above, depending on the degree of the disease and the condition of the patient. It is necessary that the first 5-6 sessions are carried out with an interval of 24 hours. The following courses of treatment are prescribed by the dentist.
After 5 to 6 months after the end of treatment, a control examination of the patient is carried out. Regardless of the state of the gums, they do 1 – 2 procedures (if necessary more) of Maraslavin’s treatment of the same places on the alveoli in order to eliminate possible microbial pathogens of the process. The final examination is carried out 12 months after the start of treatment.
Side effects
Allergic reactions possible. With a dense application of tampons, subfebrile condition caused by purulent exudation is possible. These phenomena disappear after removal of tampons.
