Pharmacological action

Antiseptic. Blocks the amino groups of cellular proteins. It has a wide range of antimicrobial effects. Active against bacteria (including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus), fungi, viruses, protozoa.

The active substance of the drug – iodine – is in the form of a complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone), which belongs to the iodophors that bind iodine. The concentration of active iodine is 0.1-1%. Upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes, iodine is gradually and evenly released, exerting a bactericidal effect on microorganisms. At the place of use, a thin colored layer remains, which remains until the entire amount of iodine is released.

Absorption and distribution of

With the contact of povidone iodine with the mucous membrane, absorption of iodine and increase in its content in the blood is possible (the concentration returns to its original value 7-14 days after the last use of the drug). In patients with normal thyroid function, increased absorption of iodine does not cause significant changes in its hormonal function.

Excretion

Iodine is excreted mainly by the kidneys. The half-life (T1 / 2) after intravaginal administration is about 48 hours.

Indications

Acute and chronic infectious and inflammatory diseases of the vagina (trichomonas, fungal, viral, nonspecific, mixed infections) bacterial vaginitis.

Prevention of infectious and inflammatory complications before gynecological interventions (artificial termination of pregnancy, installation and removal of the intrauterine device, diathermocoagulation of the cervix, hysterosalpingography and others).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug, thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism), D “јhring’s herpetiform dermatitis, thyroid adenoma, simultaneous use of radioactive iodine, children under 8 years old.

Precautions

Chronic renal failure, pregnancy, lactation, old age.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Iodoxide is contraindicated during pregnancy. The drug Iodoxide can not be used to treat the skin of premature and newborn babies.

Special instructions

In the presence of blood, the bactericidal effect of povidone iodine may decrease.

In case of non-manifest hyperthyroidism and other thyroid diseases (especially in elderly patients), the drug is used only according to strict indications and under constant medical supervision.

Due to the oxidizing properties of povidone iodine, traces of it may lead to false positive results of certain types of studies for the detection of occult blood in feces, as well as blood or glucose in urine.

During the use of povidone iodine, thyroid absorption of iodine may decrease, which may affect the results of some diagnostic studies (for example, thyroid scintigraphy, determination of protein-bound iodine, measurements using radioactive iodine), as well as interaction with iodine preparations, used to treat thyroid diseases. To obtain undistorted results of thyroid scintigraphy after prolonged therapy with povidone-iodine, it is recommended to withstand a sufficiently long period of time without this drug. If symptoms of hyperthyroidism occur during the course of treatment, thyroid function should be checked.

Caution should be observed with regular use of the drug in patients with previously diagnosed renal failure.

Avoid regular use of the drug Iodoxide ® in patients receiving lithium preparations.

Caution is advised when administering vaginal suppositories to virgins.

Stains on skin and tissues are easily washed off with water.

Suppositories have a spermicidal effect, and therefore their use in persons planning a pregnancy is not recommended.

Hygiene pads may be recommended during the use of suppositories.

After contact with the drug, avoid contact with the eyes.
