Pharmacological action
Furamag is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent belonging to the group of nitrofurans. Furamagu resistance develops slowly and does not reach a high degree.
Active against: g ramp positive cocci (Streptococcus spp, Staphylococcus spp), gram-negative rods (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spr, Shigella spp, Proteus spp, Klebsiella spp, Enterobacter spp), protozoa (Lamblia intestinalis), and other antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.
Furamag, in comparison with other nitrofurans, is more active against: Staphylococcus spp, Escherichia coli, Aerobacter aerogenes, Leuconostoc citrovorum, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus morganii.
Against most bacteria, the bacteriostatic concentration is from 1: 100,000 to 1: 200,000. The bactericidal concentration is about 2 times greater.
Under the influence of nitrofurans in microorganisms, the respiratory chain and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) are suppressed, as well as the inhibition of other biochemical processes of microorganisms, resulting in the destruction of their membrane or cytoplasmic membrane.
As a result of the action of nitrofurans, microorganisms produce less toxins, and therefore an improvement in the general condition of the patient is possible even before the marked suppression of microflora growth. Nitrofurans activate the body’s immune system: increase the titer of complement and the ability of leukocytes to phagocytize microorganisms. Furazidine in therapeutic doses stimulates leukopoiesis.
Indications
Infections caused by susceptible microorganisms:
– Urogenital infections (acute cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis).
– Gynecological infections.
– Infections of the skin and soft tissues.
– Severe infected burns.
– For prophylactic purposes in urological operations (including cystoscopy, catheterization).
Contraindications
– Severe chronic renal failure.
– Pregnancy.
– Lactation (breastfeeding).
– Children under 3 years old.
– Hypersensitivity to drugs of the nitrofuran group.
Use with caution drug glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in the neonatal period.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
The use of the drug during pregnancy and during lactation (breastfeeding) is contraindicated.
Composition
1 capsule contains: furazidine (in the form of potassium salt) 50 mg.
Excipients: basic magnesium carbonate.
Dosage and administration of
The drug should be taken orally after a meal.
Adults are prescribed 50-100 mg 3 times / day.
Children over 3 years of age are prescribed 25-50 mg (not more than 5 mg / kg of body weight) 3 times / day.
The course of treatment is 7-10 days. If necessary, repeat the treatment should take a break for 10-15 days. To prevent infection (including during urological operations, cystoscopy, catheterization), the drug is prescribed 50 mg once 30 minutes before the procedure. If you miss the drug, the next dose should be taken at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose.
Drug interactions
Furamag should not be used concomitantly with ristomycin, chloramphenicol, sulfonamides (increased risk of hemopoiesis inhibition). It is not recommended to prescribe along with nitrofurans drugs that can acidify urine (including ascorbic acid, calcium chloride).
Overdose
Symptoms: neurotoxic, ataxia, tremor.
Treatment: Drink plenty of fluid. Antihistamines (diphenhydramine) are used to relieve acute symptoms. For the prevention of neuritis, the appointment of vitamins (thiamine bromide) is possible.
