Pharmacological action
Dimexide is an anti-inflammatory agent with a local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It has a moderate antiseptic and fibrinolytic effect.
Dimethyl sulfoxide inhibits inflammatory tissue infiltration. In addition, dimethyl sulfoxide contributes to the normalization of fibrinogenesis, increases microcirculation in tissues, inhibiting red blood cell aggregation, increases phagocyte activity, suppresses neutrophil chemotaxis and reduces the content of circulating immune complexes.
Penetrates through the skin, mucous membranes, the cell wall of bacteria (increases their sensitivity to antibiotics) and other biological membranes, increases their permeability to drugs. The drug is low toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
When the drug is applied, dimethyl sulfoxide is detected in the blood serum after 8 15 minutes, and the maximum content is observed after 2 8 hours. As a rule, after 30 36 hours, dimethyl sulfoxide in the blood serum is no longer detected. Dimethyl sulfoxide does not cumulate. With topical use of the drug, dimethyl sulfoxide penetrates the articular cavity, binds to proteins in the blood and tissues.
It is excreted from the body through the kidneys unchanged and excreted in the form of oxidized products – dimethyl sulfone and dimethyl sulfate as well as a reduced product (dimethyl sulfide) with exhaled air.
Indications

With caution: due to the fact that Dimexide can enhance not only the activity, but also the toxicity of certain drugs, caution should be exercised when it is prescribed simultaneously with other drugs.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation is contraindicated.
Special instructions
Given the possibility of individual intolerance to the drug, it is recommended to conduct a drug test for tolerance to it. For this, the gel is applied in a thin layer on the skin of the elbow. The appearance of sharp redness and itching indicates an increased sensitivity to Dimexidum.
If allergic reactions occur during treatment with the drug, the drug is discontinued, H1-histamine receptor blockers are prescribed.

Side effects
In the process of using the drug, contact dermatitis, garlic odor of exhaled air, increased skin pigmentation, allergic reactions, erythematous rashes, dry skin, slight burning can be observed. Some patients have a poor perception of the smell of the drug (nausea, retching), in rare cases bronchospasm is possible. If any of the side effects indicated in the instructions are aggravated or any other side effects not listed in the instructions appear, you should inform your doctor.
Drug interaction
Enhances the penetration through the skin of drugs (NSAIDs, antibiotics, etc.), which leads to an increase in their activity, in some combinations – to toxicity.
Overdose
Symptoms: increased dose-related side effects.
Treatment: in these cases, the drug should be canceled, wash the damaged area, remove the drug.
