Description

The pharmacological action of

Alzan belongs to the group of 2 antagonists. Atipamezole hydrochloride – the active substance of Alzan – selectively blocks 2 receptors ( 2 antagonist), which causes the release of norepinephrine in the central and peripheral nervous system. This leads to stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, as a result of which the sedative effect of medetomidine hydrochloride (Dorben), which activates 2 receptors, is eliminated. Alzan is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection and after 10-15 minutes reaches its maximum concentration in the blood. Atipamezole hydrochloride is metabolized mainly in the liver, a smaller part – in the kidneys. Excreted mainly in the urine in the form of metabolites. The elimination half-life is 1 hour.

Indications

Assign to eliminate the sedative and analgesic effects of Dorben (medetomidine hydrochloride) and dexmedetomidine in dogs and cats, as well as to eliminate the side effects of medetomidine or dexmedetomidine on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Contraindications

The drug is not intended for use in productive animals.

Composition

The solution for injection contains 1 mg of active substance atipamezole hydrochloride – 5 mg, and as auxiliary substances – Methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218) – 1 mg, sodium chloride and water for injection – up to 1 ml.

Dosage and administration

The drug is administered intramuscularly once, 15-60 minutes after the introduction of medetomidine or dexmedetomidine. The sedative effect of Dorben is usually removed within 5-10 minutes. If necessary, re-introduction of Alzan is possible in 10-15 minutes. For dogs, the dose of Alzan in ml is equal to the dose of Dorben or Dexdomitor. For cats, the Alzan dose in ml is equal to half the administered dose of Dorben or Dexdomitor

An overdose of atipamezole hydrochloride can lead to the development of transient tachycardia and agitation (hyperactivity, muscle tremor).

If necessary, it is possible to relieve these symptoms by the introduction of medetomidine or dexmedetomidine hydrochloride in a dose lower than that commonly used in clinical practice. With the accidental administration of atipamezole hydrochloride to animals that have not previously received medetomidine or dexmedetomidine hydrochloride, hyperactivity and muscle tremor may also develop, which can persist for 15 minutes.

Peculiarities of the action at the beginning of administration and discontinuation of the drug were not detected.

The drug is intended for single administration.
