Pharmacological action of
Betagistin acts primarily on histamine H1 and H3 receptors located in the vestibular nuclei of the central nervous system (CNS) and inner ear.
The drug improves the permeability of the capillaries of the inner ear and the microcirculation processes in them, and also normalizes the pressure of the endolymph in the cochlea and the labyrinth through a direct agonistic effect on the H1 receptors located in the vessels of the inner ear, as well as indirect effects on the H3 receptors.
At the same time, the active substance of the drug increases blood flow in the basilar artery. Betagistin is characterized by a pronounced central effect, being an inhibitor of H3 receptors, the localization sites of which are the nuclei of the vestibular nerve.
The drug improves the conductivity in the neurons of the vestibular nuclei at the level of the brain stem.
The above properties provide a therapeutic effect, which is expressed in the normalization of hearing in case of deterioration, a decrease in tinnitus, and a decrease in the intensity and frequency of dizziness.
Betahistin enhances the tone of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and smooth muscles of the bronchi, and can also enhance the secretion of gastric juice.
