Description

Pharmacological action

Karprofen is the most studied non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic and decongestant drug for dogs in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Carprofen inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase in the arachidonic acid cycle. In this case, the drug mainly affects cyclooxygenase-II, which is produced in response to inflammation. As a result, the synthesis of prostaglandins is blocked. In therapeutic doses, carprofen has a much weaker effect on cyclooxygenase-I, and therefore does not significantly affect the synthesis of protective prostaglandins, the lack of which in the body can cause impaired renal function (slowing down renal blood flow), platelet aggregation, increased secretion of the glands of the stomach and intestines, impaired water-salt balance, cardiac activity and other functional disorders. The drug has anti-bradykinin activity, inhibiting the perception of pain at the level of the central parts of the brain and spinal cord. Carprofen is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and its concentration reaches a peak in blood plasma 1 to 3 hours after oral administration. The elimination half-life is about 10 hours. Carprofen is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins and metabolized in the liver, excreted in feces (about 80%) and urine. Rikarfa meat-flavored tablets, according to the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals, are classified as moderately hazardous substances.

Indications

Assign to dogs for inflammatory and pain syndromes arising from acute and chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as during the period of postoperative rehabilitation of the animal.

Contraindications

Increased individual sensitivity of animals to carprofen. The drug should not be prescribed to pregnant and lactating females, puppies younger than 6 weeks of age. The drug is not recommended at the same time as other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids, diuretics and anticoagulants. If it is necessary to prescribe the above medicines to the animal, their use can be carried out no earlier than 24 hours after the cancellation of Ricarda meat-flavored tablets or 24 hours before they are taken.

Recommendations for use of

For dogs, the drug is administered orally, individually for 7 days, twice a day at a dose of 4 mg carprofen per 1 kg of animal body weight per day or at the rate of 1 tablet of the drug 20 mg per 5 kg of animal body weight, respectively. After 7 days of treatment, subject to an improvement in the clinical condition of the animal and persistent positive dynamics, the dose of the drug can be halved. The duration of the course is determined by the attending veterinarian individually, depending on the condition of the animal and the nature of the pathological process.

Special instructions

The drug is used with caution in animals with heart, kidney and liver diseases.
