Pharmacological action

Levomycetin alcohol solution – an antimicrobial drug for topical use. The drug contains an active component – chloramphenicol – a synthetic substance with pronounced bacteriostatic activity.

Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are sensitive to the action of the drug, including the drug is active against microorganisms that are resistant to other antimicrobial agents (penicillin, tetracycline, sulfanilamides).

The mechanism of action of the drug is based on its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in microorganism cells through interaction with the 50S ribosomal subunit.

In patients with trophic ulcers and burns, the use of the drug leads to an acceleration of the processes of epithelization and tissue regeneration.

When applied topically, absorption of chloramphenicol into the systemic circulation is negligible.

After a single application, the local bacteriostatic effect of the drug lasts about 6-12 hours.

Indications

Alcohol solution 1, 3 and 5% is used to treat patients suffering from skin diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to the action of chloramphenicol, including: Infected burns and wounds.

Pressure ulcers, trophic ulcers, boils.

Alcohol solution 0.25% is used for violations of the integrity of the skin, including burns, cuts, abrasions, skin cracks.

In addition, the drug can be used to treat patients with purulent otitis media.

Contraindications

Increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug.

The drug is not prescribed for patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, severe impaired renal and / or liver function, intermittent porphyria and impaired hematopoietic function.

The drug should not be prescribed to patients with skin diseases, including diseases of the fungal etiology, psoriasis and eczema.

The drug is not used for the treatment of women during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as for the treatment of children under the age of 1 year.

The drug should be prescribed with caution to patients who underwent radiation therapy, as well as therapy with cytostatic agents.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

The drug is contraindicated for women during pregnancy.

If you need to use the drug during lactation, you should consult your doctor and decide on a temporary interruption of breastfeeding.

Dosage and administration

The drug is intended for external use.

Adults and children over 1 year of age with bacterial infections of the skin, as well as damage to the integrity of the skin, are usually prescribed to apply the solution to the damaged area 2-3 times a day. The solution should be applied to a cotton swab, which is then treated with skin.

Adults and children over the age of 1 year with purulent otitis media are usually prescribed 2-3 drops of the solution 1-2 times a day.

The solution should be pipetted into the external auditory meatus. In the presence of strong secretions, the drug can be used 3-4 times a day.

In severe infections of the skin and ear, the drug is usually prescribed in combination with systemic antimicrobials.

The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the attending physician individually.

Side effects

The drug is usually well tolerated by patients, in isolated cases, the development of allergic reactions, including skin rash, itching, urticaria and Quincke’s edema.

With prolonged use of the drug in patients, side effects from the hematopoietic system, in particular thrombocytopenia, erythropenia, agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia, may develop.

If side effects from the hematopoietic system develop, you should stop using the drug.

With prolonged use of the drug, it is necessary to control the blood picture.

Overdose

With prolonged use, as well as with high doses of the drug, patients may develop irritation of the skin and mucous membranes, as well as local allergic reactions, including skin rash, itching and urticaria.

In isolated cases, the development of edema and hyperemia at the site of the use of high doses of the drug was noted.

With the development of symptoms of overdose, the dose of the drug should be reduced, if the patient does not show improvement after the dose is reduced, the drug is canceled.
