Pharmacological action of

Antimicrobial, antibacterial (bacteriostatic). Derivative of nitrofuran.

Furazolidone disrupts the activity of certain bacterial enzyme systems.

Active against gram-negative microorganisms (Shigella spp., Salmonella spp.,) and some gram-positive microorganisms, Trichomonas, Giardia. Inactive against pathogens of purulent and anaerobic infections. Furazolidone is also active against a number of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and sulfonamides. The resistance of microorganisms to furazolidone develops slowly.

Quickly absorbed in the digestive tract, distributed throughout the tissues (including the central nervous system), in the liver turns into an amino derivative. Excreted by the kidneys and intestines.

Contraindications

The terminal stage of chronic renal failure, impaired liver function, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, lactation, children under 8 years of age, increased individual sensitivity to drug components and nitrofurans.

Do not prescribe for urinary tract infections.

Composition

1 tablet contains:

active ingredient: furazolidone – 50 mg

excipients: lactose monohydrate, anhydrous colloidal silicon dioxide, calcium stearate, potato starch.

Dosage and administration

The drug is taken orally after a meal with a large amount of liquid (100-200 ml).

For dysentery, paratyphoid, food toxicoinfections for adults are prescribed 2-3 tablets (100-150 mg) 4 times a day (but not more than 800 mg) for 5-10 days. Children over 8 years of age are prescribed a drug at a rate of 6-7 mg / kg body weight per day, the daily dose is divided into 4 doses. The duration of the course depends on the severity of the disease and the effectiveness and sensitivity to therapy.

Side effects

In some cases, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, allergic reactions (skin rash, hyperemia and itching of the skin, allergic edema) can occur.

Drug Interactions

Urine alkalizing agents reduce the effect (accelerate urine excretion), acidifying agents increase it. Aminoglycosides and tetracycline enhance antimicrobial properties.

Increases inhibition of hematopoiesis against the background of chloramphenicol and ristomycin.

Overdose

Symptoms: acute toxic hepatitis, hematotoxicity, neurotoxicity (polyneuritis).

Treatment: drug withdrawal, large fluid intake, symptomatic therapy, antihistamines, and B vitamins.
