Pharmacological action of

Furagin is an antibacterial drug derived from nitrofuran. It acts bacteriostatically. The mechanism of action of Furagin is associated with exposure to enzymes involved in the transfer of hydrogen in cells of sensitive microorganisms. High bacteriostatic activity of Furagin is associated with the presence of an aromatic nitro group.

The drug is active against gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus faecalis gram-negative bacteria: Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant to the drug.

The minimum bacteriostatic concentration of Furagin (1 μg / ml) is 10-20 times lower than other nitrofuran derivatives. Furagin exerts the most pronounced effect in an acidic medium (pH 5.5), an alkaline medium inhibits the action of the drug.

Indications

– treatment of acute and chronic infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract and prostate gland

– prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections (including in children with congenital malformations of the urinary system, in adults with prolonged catheterization).

Contraindications

– renal failure

– polyneuropathy (incl. diabetic)

– glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

– pregnancy: period between the 38th and 42nd weeks

– lactation

– hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives.

The drug is not prescribed for newborns until the end of the first month of life.

Special instructions

Furagin should be prescribed with caution to patients with diabetes mellitus, as against the background of the use of the drug, symptoms of polyneuropathy may appear.

Do not recommend prescribing Furagin for urosepsis, as well as for infections of the renal parenchyma.

During the period of application of Furagin, false-positive results of determination of glucose in urine with the use of Benedict and Feling solutions can be observed. Urine glucose test results performed by enzymatic methods remain correct.

Monitoring laboratory parameters

During prolonged treatment with Furagin, the level of leukocytes in the blood, as well as indicators of liver and kidney function, should be periodically monitored.

Effect on the ability to drive vehicles and control mechanisms

Furagin does not affect the speed of psychomotor reactions, so it can be prescribed to patients whose activities require increased attention.

Composition

active substance: furazidine 50 mg

Dosing and Administration

For treatment, adults are prescribed 100 mg (2 tablets) 4 times / day on the first day of therapy, and 100 mg 3 times / day on the following days.

For children, the drug is prescribed in a daily dose of 5-7 mg / kg body weight, with prolonged treatment – in a daily dose of 1-2 mg / kg.

The course of treatment is 7-8 days. If necessary, after 10-15 days, the course of treatment can be repeated.

For prophylaxis, the drug is prescribed at 50 mg (1 tab.) 1 time / day (preferably in the evening).

Pills should be taken with food, containing proteins.

Side effects

From the digestive system: diarrhea, dyspeptic symptoms, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting.

From the side of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: dizziness, drowsiness, visual impairment rarely – polyneuropathy.

Allergic reactions: rash, itching.

Other: fever, chills, malaise rarely – pulmonary reactions caused by hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives.

Drug interaction

With the simultaneous use of Furagin and nalidixic acid, a decrease in the bacteriostatic effect of Furagin is noted.

With the simultaneous use of Furagin and uricosuric preparations (probenecid, sulfinpyrazone), the excretion of furazidine in the urine decreases, which leads to a decrease in its therapeutic effectiveness. This can lead to cumulation of furazidine in the body and increase the toxicity of furagin.

With the simultaneous use of furagin and antacids containing magnesium trisilicate, the absorption of furagin decreases.

Overdose

Symptoms: headache, dizziness, depression, psychosis, peripheral polyneuritis, allergic reactions (urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm), nausea, vomiting, megaloblastic or hemolytic anemia (in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) is very rare – impaired liver function.

Treatment: gastric lavage, in / in the introduction of infusion solutions in severe cases, hemodialysis is indicated.

Storage Conditions

Store in a dry, dark place.
