Pharmacological action of
Maltofer contains iron in the form of a polymaltose complex of iron (III) hydroxide. This macromolecular complex is stable and does not release iron in the form of free ions in the gastrointestinal tract.
The structure of the Maltofer ® preparation is similar to the natural iron compound ferritin. Due to this similarity, iron (III) enters the intestine into the bloodstream by active transport.
Absorbed iron binds to ferritin and is stored in the body, mainly in the liver. Then, in the bone marrow, it is included in the composition of hemoglobin.
Iron, which is part of the polymaltose complex of iron hydroxide (III), does not have prooxidant properties, unlike simple salts of iron.
There is a correlation between the severity of iron deficiency and its absorption level (the greater the severity of iron deficiency, the better absorption). The most active process of absorption occurs in the duodenum and small intestine.
Maltofer ® does not cause staining of tooth enamel.
Indications
– Latent iron deficiency and clinically pronounced iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia)
– Prevention of iron deficiency in women during pregnancy, breastfeeding, in the childbearing period, in children, incl. in adolescence, in adults (for example, vegetarians and the elderly).
Contraindications
– Iron overload (eg, hemosiderosis and hemochromatosis).
– Disruption of iron utilization (lead anemia, siderohrestical anemia).
– Non-iron deficiency anemia (hemolytic, megaloblastic, caused by a lack of vitamin B 12).
Use in pregnancy and lactation
In controlled trials in pregnant women after the first trimester of pregnancy, no adverse effects on the mother and fetus were noted.
There were no negative effects of the drug on the fetus during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Dosage and Administration
Inside.
Take with or immediately after a meal. The daily dose of the drug depends on the degree of iron deficiency.
The duration of treatment for clinically pronounced iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) is 3-5 months, until hemoglobin levels normalize.
After this, the drug should be continued in a dosage for the treatment of latent iron deficiency for a few more months, and for pregnant women, at least until delivery to restore iron stores.
The duration of treatment for latent iron deficiency is 1 2 months.
In the case of clinically severe iron deficiency, normalization of hemoglobin level and replenishment of iron stores occurs only 2-3 months after the start of treatment.
Side effects of the
From the digestive tract: sensation of overflow, pressure in the epigastric region, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, dark staining of the stool is possible due to the release of non-absorbable iron, which has no clinical significance.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, no signs of intoxication or signs of excess iron intake have been described to date.
