Otoxolan is a combination drug with antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects. Due to the combination of active components with a different mechanism of action, the drug has a wide spectrum of antibacterial and fungicidal activity, has an anti-inflammatory effect in the lesion. Marbofloxacin, which is part of the drug, belongs to the compounds of the fluoroquinolone group, is active against gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms, including Staphylococcus intermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis, does not affect anaerobes. The mechanism of action of marbofloxacin is to inhibit the synthesis of DNA of microorganisms.
Clotrimazole – A fungicidal compound of the imidazole group, by changing the permeability of the cell membrane, it causes the destruction of cellular elements and inhibits intracellular molecular synthesis. Active against dermatophytes and yeast, in particular Malassezia pachydermatis. Dexamethasone acetate synthetic Glucocorticosteroids, has anti-inflammatory and anti-exudative effects, helps reduce itching and healing damaged tissues.
Otoxolan is given to dogs for the treatment of otitis media of bacterial and fungal etiology caused by microorganisms and fungi sensitive to marbofloxacin and clotrimazole.
Contraindication to the use of Otoxolan is the individual hypersensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug, including a history. It is forbidden to use the drug in animals with perforation of the eardrum.
The use of the drug is not allowed for puppies and lactating females.
The drug is not intended for use by productive animals.
Otoxolan as active ingredients in 1 ml contains: marbofloxacin – 3 mg, clotrimazole – 10 mg, dexamethasone acetate – 1 mg, and as auxiliary components propyl gallate, medium chain triglycerides, sorbitan oleate, silicon dioxide oxide.
Dosage and administration
Before treatment, the ear canal and the ear canal are hygienically treated. The drug bottle is shaken thoroughly for 30 seconds, gently squeeze the bottle to fill the cannula, and then Otoxolan is instilled 5-10 drops in each ear (depending on the size of the animal) and gently massage the base of the ear. Side effects and complications when using the drug Otoxolan in accordance with this instruction, as a rule, is not observed. In long-term use, some dogs may experience symptoms due to the influence of a corticosteroid hormone (increase in alkaline phosphatase, aminotransferase, neutrophilia, eosinopenia, lymphopenia). In rare cases, transient deafness may be observed in older dogs.
With increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug and the manifestation of allergic reactions (skin itching, increased salivation), the use of the drug Otoxolan is discontinued.
