Pharmacological action
Has a metabolic, hepatoprotective effect. The essential amino acid is a donor of mobile metal groups, necessary for the synthesis of choline, the deficiency of which is associated with a violation of the synthesis of phospholipids from fats and the deposition of neutral fat in the liver.
Participates in the exchange of sulfur-containing amino acids, in the synthesis of epinephrine, creatinine and other biologically important compounds, activates the action of hormones, vitamins (B12, ascorbic acid, folic acid), enzymes, proteins, methylation reactions, deamination, decarboxylation, etc.
It is necessary for desensitization . With atherosclerosis, it reduces the concentration of cholesterol and increases the concentration of blood phospholipids.
Indications
Liver diseases occurring with fatty hepatocyte infiltration: toxic hepatitis, hepatosis (including alcoholic), cirrhosis, intoxication of the liver.
Prevention of toxic liver damage with arsenic, chloroform, benzene, alcohol.
As part of combination therapy: protein deficiency of various origins, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to methionine, severe liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, viral hepatitis.
Special instructions
Use with caution in case of renal failure (danger of an increase in hyperazotemia).
With the use of methionine in patients with atherosclerosis, a decrease in blood cholesterol and an increase in the level of phospholipids were noted.
Should be prescribed in balance with other amino acids. The unbalanced use of methionine in large doses can have a damaging effect on liver cells and other organs.
