Mechanism of action

Natamycin is a macrolide antifungal antibiotic with a wide spectrum of action. It has a fungicidal effect. It binds to sterols of cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and function, which leads to the death of microorganisms.

Active against most pathogenic yeast-like fungi (especially Candida albicans), yeast (Torulopsis and Rhodotorula), as well as other pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus, Penicillium). Less active against dermatophytes (Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton).

In vitro sensitivity

He affects in vitro gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Resistance

Natamycin resistance is not found in clinical practice.

Pharmacokinetics

Natamycin does not have a systemic effect, because practically not absorbed through intact skin and intact mucous membranes.

Indications

Vaginitis, vulvitis, vulvovaginitis caused by fungi of the genus Candida.

Contraindications

Dosage and administration

Dosage and administration: for vaginal use.

Suppositories, previously freed from the contour packaging, are injected into the vagina, while in the supine position, as deep as possible 1 time / day at night.

Dosing

For candida vaginitis, vulvitis. vulvovaginitis: intravaginally one suppository for 3-6 days.

The duration of treatment is set individually. After the symptoms disappear, it is recommended to continue treatment for a few more days. For the period of menstruation, the use of suppositories is interrupted.

With the persistent course of vaginitis caused by Candida albicans, natamycin is additionally prescribed in the form of tablets for oral administration: 1 tablet 4 times / day for 10-20 days to sanitize the focus of candidal infection in the intestines.

Side effects

When applied topically, slight irritation and a burning sensation at the injection site are possible.
