Pharmacological action
Lipofundin MCT / LCT is a source of energy and essential (polyunsaturated) fatty acids, intended for patients in need of parenteral nutrition.
Soybean oil is a refined natural product containing neutral triglycerides predominantly from unsaturated fatty acids. Medium chain triglycerides are a mixture of neutral triglycerides containing mainly caprylic (about 60%) and capric (about 40%) acids.
Medium-chain triglycerides leave the bloodstream faster and oxidize more fully for energy supply than long-chain ones. For this reason, they are preferable for the body as an energy source, especially for some oxidation disorders of long chain triglycerides, such as carnitine deficiency or decreased carnitine-palmitoyltransferase activity.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids, of which only long chain triglycerides are composed, prevent biochemical disturbances in the form of a deficiency of essential fatty acids (DFA) and correct the clinical manifestations of the syndrome of DFA.
Phosphatides, which are part of the egg yolk phosphatides, are included in the formation of membrane structures, guarantee their liquid state and biological functions. Glycerol is metabolized in the body as a source of energy, and is also used in the synthesis of glycogen and fat.
