Description

Pharmacological action

The active ingredient of the dominant is medetomidine. Medetomidine is an a2-agonist, the main effect of which is to inhibit the transmission of nerve impulses in adrenergic synapses due to competition with norepinephrine. Under the action of the drug in animals, CNS depression and an increase in the pain threshold are observed.

The effect of medetomidine is dose-dependent: small doses have an average sedative effect without analgesia, while large doses cause significant sedation and analgesia. The dominator is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection, the concentration of the drug in the blood reaches a maximum after 15-30 minutes.

Medetomidine is rapidly distributed in the body. Between 85% and 90% of the drug binds to serum proteins. Medetomidine is oxidized in the liver, a small portion is methylated in the kidneys. Most drug metabolites are excreted in the urine. The elimination half-life is 1-2 hours.

Indications

Domitor is used for dogs as a immobilizing, sedative and analgesic agent for clinical examination, diagnostic procedures, for sedation before thiopentone and halotan anesthesia. For cats – as a immobilizing and sedative. In combination with ketamine – for induction of anesthesia before general anesthesia during surgical operations.

Contraindications

Contraindications for use are: heart failure, impaired liver or kidney function, pregnancy.

Composition

Aqueous injection, containing 1 mg of active ingredient 1 mg of medetomidine hydrochloride in 1 ml.

Dosage and administration of

Pure Domit is administered intramuscularly, intravenously and subcutaneously to dogs, intramuscularly and subcutaneously to cats. The maximum effect occurs in 10-15 minutes. The duration of clinical action depends on the dose and varies significantly (from 30 to 80 minutes). The drug acts faster after intravenous administration, more slowly after intramuscular and subcutaneous. The degree of sedation can be adjusted by selecting the dose of the drug.

To maintain a sedative and analgesic effect, the drug can be re-administered 10-15 minutes after the first injection.

To achieve a sedative effect and analgesia, the following doses are used: dogs: 0.1-0.8 ml / 10 kg, cats

: 0.05-0.15 ml / kg.

Doses of the drug vary depending on the desired effect, individual characteristics and the breed of the animal. High doses cause pronounced sedation and analgesia, low doses have only a sedative effect.

Small dogs require a higher dose of domitory than large dogs. The introduction of a dominator can cause a decrease in heart rate and respiratory movements.

Side effects

Blood pressure immediately after administration of the drug rises, then drops to normal or remains slightly reduced. Some dogs and most cats may vomit after 5-10 minutes. after the injection, and in a number of cats this is also observed at the exit from anesthesia. In some cases, there is a slight twitching of individual muscle groups. Under the influence of a dominator, the heart rate slows down and the body temperature decreases. After using the drug, the animals should be kept warm for at least 12 hours.

Inhibition of blood circulation and respiration, oxygenation is indicated. Atropine can be used to increase your heart rate, but keep in mind that it can be the cause of arrhythmia. The action of the dominator can be eliminated by the use of a specific antagonist – antisedan.
