Description
Pharmacological action
The mechanism of the antiprotozoal effect of imidocarb is associated with the suppression of the intake of inositol, which is necessary for the vital activity of blood parasite, as well as with the violation of the formation and use of polyamines by parasites.
After parenteral administration of the drug, the therapeutic concentration of imidocarb dipropionate in the blood is reached after 18-24 hours and remains at the pyroplasma-static level for 4-6 weeks. Imidocarb dipropionate accumulates, mainly in the kidneys and liver, and is excreted mainly in the urine.
Indications
Assign for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes to dogs with blood parasitic diseases – acute, chronic and subclinical babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, as well as with mixed invasions.
Contraindications
Increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug, pregnancy. Do not use the drug for 4 weeks after vaccination with a live vaccine against babesiosis or anaplasmosis.
Not AllowedI use Babesan 4% and a solution for injection with organochlorine, organophosphorus preparations and other cholinesterase inhibitors at the same time.
Special instructions
Due to a possible painful reaction, the drug should not be administered in one place in a volume exceeding 2.5 ml.
Composition
Antiprotozoal drug from the imidazoline group. Contains 1 ml of imidocarb dipropionate as an active ingredient – 40 mg.
Dosage and administration
Dogs Babesan 4% injection is used for babesiosis for therapeutic purposes once subcutaneously at a dose of 4 mg imidocarb per 1 kg of animal weight, which corresponds to 0.1 ml / kg Babesan 4% injection.
If babesia is found in a blood smear one day after the use of the drug, the solution is re-administered in the same dose.
For prophylactic purposes, if clinical signs of babesiosis appear or within a week after moving the animals to areas unsuccessful to the Babesan disease, 4% (and 12%) injection is used in dogs once in a therapeutic dose.
Protective effect after injection of the drug persists for 4 weeks. In animals with clinical signs of babesiosis, it is advisable to use antihistamines before administering the drug.
Side effects
In case of an overdose and / or increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the drug, complications may develop (bradycardia, rapid and respiratory failure, anorexia, excessive salivation, lacrimation, sweating, muscle tremors, frequent urination and defecation), in these cases, a 1% solution of atropine is prescribed subcutaneously, symptomatic agents and desensitizing therapy are performed.
In rare cases, a local reaction in the form of hyperemia or painful swelling at the injection site of the drug is possible, which disappears spontaneously after 1-2 days. Repeated administration may be accompanied by a decrease in blood pressure.
Storage conditions
Store the drug in the manufacturer’s packaging, in a place protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature of 5 to 25 ° C.
Shelf life
2 years from the date of manufacture, after opening the bottle – no more than 28 days.
