Indications

Uncomplicated gallstone disease (biliary sludge dissolving cholesterol gallstones in the gallbladder, if it is impossible to remove them by surgical or endoscopic methods, prevention of relapse of stone formation after cholecystectomy)

Contraindications

X-ray positive (high calcium) gallstones

Ursosan is used with caution: in children aged 2 to 4 years, as it may be difficult to swallow capsules, although ursodeoxycholic acid has no age-related restrictions on use.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Use of ursodeoxycholic acid during pregnancy is possible only if when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus (adequate, strictly controlled studies of the use of ursodeoxycholic acid in pregnant women have not been conducted).

There are currently no data on the release of ursodeoxycholic acid in breast milk. If it is necessary to use ursodeoxycholic acid during lactation, the issue of stopping breastfeeding should be addressed.

Dosage and administration

Ursosan capsules are taken orally with plenty of water.

Prescription for diffuse liver diseases, cholelithiasis

For diffuse liver diseases, cholelithiasis (cholesterol gallstones and biliary sludge), the drug is prescribed continuously for a long time (from several months to several years) in a daily dose of 10 mg / kg body weight up to 12-15 mg / kg (2-5 caps.).

Prescription for diffuse liver diseases

For diffuse liver diseases, the daily dose of Ursosan is divided into 2-3 doses, the capsules are taken with food.

Prescription for gallstone disease

In gallstone disease, the entire daily dose is taken once a night. The duration of taking the drug to dissolve the stones is until complete dissolution, and then another 3 months for the prevention of relapse of stone formation.

Appointment for biliary reflux gastritis and reflux esophagitis

For biliary reflux gastritis and reflux esophagitis, the drug is prescribed 250 mg (1 caps.) per day, at bedtime. The course of treatment is from 10-14 days to 6 months, if necessary – up to 2 years.

Purpose for the prevention of re-cholelithiasis after cholecystectomy

After cholecystectomy, for the prevention of re-cholelithiasis, the recommended dose is 250 mg 2 times / day for several months.

Prescribing for toxic, medicinal liver damage, alcoholic liver disease and biliary atresia

For toxic, medicinal liver damage, alcoholic liver disease and biliary atresia, the daily dose is set at 10-15 mg / kg / in 2-3 doses. The duration of therapy is 6-12 months or more.

Prescription for primary biliary cirrhosis

For primary biliary cirrhosis, the drug is prescribed at a rate of 10-15 mg / kg / day (if necessary, up to 20 mg / kg) in 2-3 doses. The duration of therapy is from 6 months to several years.

Prescribing for primary sclerosing cholangitis

For primary sclerosing cholangitis – 12-15 mg / kg / day (up to 20 mg / kg) in 2-3 doses. The duration of therapy is from 6 months to several years.

Prescribing for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

For non-alcoholic steatohepatitis – 13-15 mg / kg / day in 2-3 doses. The duration of therapy is from 6 months to several years.

Prescription for cystic fibrosis

In cystic fibrosis, the dose is set at the rate of 20-30 mg / kg / day in 2-3 doses. The duration of therapy is from 6 months to several years.

Prescribing in children over the age of 2 years

For children over the age of 2 years, the dose of the drug is set individually at the rate of 10-20 mg / kg / day.

Side effects of the digestive system: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (may be dose-dependent), constipation, transient (transient) increased activity of hepatic transaminases (AST, ALT) rarely – calcification of gallstones.

Other: back pain, allergic reactions, exacerbation of previously existing psoriasis, alopecia is rare – calcification of gallstones.

Drug Interaction

Reduction of UDCA absorption – when combined, aluminum-containing antacids and ion-exchange resins (colestyramine) reduce UDCA absorption.

Decrease in ability of UDHK to dissolve cholesterol bilious concretions – at a concomitant use of lipid-lowering drugs (especially clofibrate), estrogens, neomycin or progestins increase bile saturation with cholesterol and can reduce the ability of UDLC to dissolve cholesterol.

Overdose

There are no known cases of overdose with ursodeoxycholic acid.
