Description

Pharmacological action

Dirofen paste 20 and 60 refers to combined anthelmintic drugs. Thanks to praziquantel and pyrantel, which is part of the preparation, it has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic action on sexually mature and larval stages of development of round and ribbon helminths, which are parasitic in dogs and cats (Tohosara sannis, Tohosara mistax, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephphoma, Uninaria stenichurisphalomaphalaisphaloma phalaisphaloma lephinisphisis, Uncinaria stenocephula Echinococcus granulosus, Alveococcus multilocularis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Dipylidium caninum, Diphyllobotrium latum, Multiceps multiceps), in ferrets (Toxoscaris leonina, Toxocara cati and Ancylastoma sp, Taenia solium, Fasciola hepatica) and in decorative rodents (Syphacia obvelata, Syphacia muris, Aspiculuris tetraptera, Rodentolepis straminea, Hymenolepis nana, Hymenolepis diminuta).

The mechanism of action of the praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate included in the drug is based on the inhibition of fumarate reductase, persistent depolarization of the helminth muscle cells, impaired energy metabolism, which causes paralysis and death of helminths and helps to eliminate them from the gastrointestinal tract.

When administered orally, praziquantel is rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, reaching a maximum plasma concentration after 1 to 3 hours, and is distributed in the animal’s organs and tissues, excreted mainly in the urine (up to 80%) within 24 hours. Pyrantel pamoate is poorly absorbed, which ensures its prolonged effect on helminths in the intestine, is excreted from the body mainly in unchanged form with feces (93%).

Dirofen paste 20 and 60 are classified as low-hazard substances according to the degree of exposure to the body (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), at the recommended doses it does not have an embryotoxic, teratogenic and sensitizing effect. Well tolerated by dogs and cats of different breeds and ages, ferrets and rodents.
